Update from COO, Judi Allen

Judi Allen, Chief Operating Officer

I write this on the anniversary of the day we closed the YMCA in 2020. Like everyone, we had no idea what the future of our business would look like. During the pandemic, the Helena Y staff was amazing. If I had one word to describe my team, it is: adaptive. You need a distance learning program full-time, five days per week? No problem, we got it; Can you hold swim team practice for three high school teams, while implementing COVID protocols and keeping everyone safe? Sure thing, we got you!

This could not have happened without great community partnerships. I am so grateful to Lewis and Clark County and the Helena School District for partnering with our Helena Y to help make our programs work for the community. Did you know that our childcare program did not shut down once due to a COVID outbreak, and in the middle of all of this we became a licensed childcare center, which is a challenge in a regular year. Our entire childcare staff is to be commended for these achievements!

On a personal note, besides not being able to visit my mom in a local memory care facility, I know I will never take for granted the ability to attend a youth sporting event ever again. I have said it before: I LOVE sports! I am a sports mom and fan, and it brings me great joy to announce that kids’ sports are back at the Helena YMCA! Spring soccer is open, and the links are below to register. We also have an approved COVID safety plan, should we need to enforce it. We will soon open registration for T-ball and 3-on-3-Basketball for the summer season, so stay tuned for those updates.

As for bringing back more in-person fitness classes, like Silver Sneakers and the ever-popular water aerobics classes, we are working on plans to open those, as more of our community has the opportunity to get vaccinated. Keep an eye out for more updates in the coming weeks and months.
Thank you, Helena community, for your patience as we navigate these pandemic waters and safely return to what the Helena Y has always been: a place for all people in the community to come together. We appreciate you and look forward to seeing you all again soon!
