November 20, 2020
Dear Helena Family YMCA members, donors, and Helena community:
“A year like no other”. You can say that again.
While 2020 has brought numerous challenges requiring organizations to adapt, your Helena Family YMCA continues to focus on a long-term goal of strengthening our sustainability and enhancing our relevancy within our community. This vision includes challenges and opportunities requiring a unique combination of non-profit experience, business development, and an understanding of the Y Movement.
Earlier this year, David Oclander resigned as CEO to support his wife, as she resumed her notable military career, and to dedicate more time to his children. At that time, Judi Allen, the YMCA’s Sports and Aquatics Director, accepted the role of Interim CEO. Judi has been instrumental in developing and implementing COVID protocols and re-opening the Y, expanding the Ys childcare services while partnering with the City and County, securing grants, and managing operations and employees.
As the board of directors wrestled with moving forward, we knew our programs, services, and resources are would be limited due to the current pandemic. The question, “Where could we find the expertise needed to help continue our mission?” Enter Y-USA. YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) is the national resource office for Ys in the United States. Through Y-USA, we learned of a new program allowing YMCA’s to partner for the delivery of services – in our case, CEO services. As we learned more about the service delivery model, we found the answer to our question was in Butte.
Allow me to introduce Phillip Borup, the CEO at the Butte Family YMCA. Phillip’s experience includes financial and operations leadership within multiple industries, including non-profits, most recently, 8 years as CEO of the Butte Y. Under Phillip’s leadership, the Butte Y has experienced a comprehensive turn-around – operationally, financially, and within the community – improving programs, services, and increasing return to the community from contributions and donations. Phillip has been assisting at the Helena Y in recent months and began as CEO earlier in November, sharing time in Helena and Butte. As Helena CEO, Phillip’s primary focus will include assessing financial and operational performance, developing strategic partnerships within our community, and overseeing and managing fundraising efforts.
Judi Allen has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO) and will work side-by-side with Borup while overseeing day-to-day operations.
On Tuesday, December 1st, at 11:00 am, the Helena Family YMCA will host a virtual reception to introduce Phillip Borup. Please join us to welcome Phillip to our YMCA and the Helena community. To register for the event please contact Alana, Marketing Director, at [email protected] or click here to register online.
While we do not know what the future will bring, we look forward to continuing to serve the needs of the Helena community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Thank you for supporting your YMCA.
Chief Volunteer Officer,
Helena Family YMCA Board of Directors
