YMCA Spirit League  is a competitive travel team league open to boys and girls in 4th and 5th grade only. Travel team coaches select players and submit a roster to the YMCA by email. Coaches are guaranteed roster selections and the YMCA does not assign players to teams. Once the roster is submitted players may register on-line or at the YMCA front desk.

**The YMCA cannot guarantee that there will be enough independent players to fill a team. If there are enough players, we will be asking a parent volunteer to coach this team. The YMCA does not have the resources to provide a coach for this team. If there are not enough players to form an independent team, we will place your child on a recreational team. No refunds will be given if your child is placed on a recreational team.

All Fees include referee costs, and a participant award. Financial Assistance is available for those in need. Monies for our Financial Assistance programs are raised each spring through the YMCA’s Annual Campaign.

Your child’s practice time and site will be determined by the coach at the coaches meeting. Practices are usually one hour in length and one time per week.

Games begin the week of October 22nd and will conclude on or before December 12th and could include some Saturday games during the season. Games will be one hour long and will be played at various schools across the Helena area.

The purpose of this meeting is to help coaches understand our program, our goals, and our values. Coaches will receive their team rosters and be able to sign up for practice times at the meeting.

Spirit League (Travel Team) Coaches please click the "register now" button and choose "create and register team".  This will allow you to create a team and register your child for the team at the same time.   Parents - choose the "join a team" option.  If your child's team has not yet registered please contact your child's coach.

Coaches must register the team before players can join!!

In basketball all precautions are taken to ensure the safety of every participant. Participants should come dressed in shorts/sweats, good pair of tennis shoes (gym appropriate non marking soles) and YMCA basketball jersey.

During the fall/winter months it is very important your child brings a change of shoes!

Although not necessary, many kids “live” for the after-game snack! If you cannot be a coach or assistant coach perhaps you can help by creating a team snack schedule.

Jerseys will be ordered for all players who DO NOT already have a YMCA reversible Basketball Jersey. If your child has out grown their YMCA Reversible Basketball Jersey, please mark "no" on the application and put in the new size.

Our purpose is to provide the best quality programs for the most affordable price, based on adequate enrollments. Therefore, no refunds will be granted once the season has started. A credit (minus a 25% Administrative Charge) can be arranged for future programs. All requests must be in writing.

In YMCA Youth Sports, we strive to provide a structured environment emphasizing fun and learning, while teaching sportsmanship and teamwork. In YMCA Youth Sports, every child gets the opportunity to participate equally, regardless of ability.

Everyone Plays At The YMCA!

The spirit league expands that philosophy to meet the needs of players and coaches who welcome the opportunity for skill development in a more competitive atmosphere with players of similar skills and desires to prepare them with the physical and mental readiness to participate at high levels of competition.

Recreational   League

Competitive   (Spirit) League

Offers a place for every player regardless of skill level.Players register individually and YMCA staff assign players to teams based on school.  The primary objective is to offer a FUN experience with basic skill development in a low-key, non-competitive atmosphere.  Records are not kept. Guarantees equal playing time. Teams usually practice once per week. 8 week schedule with guarantee 6 weekend games. Offers a broad base of sport opportunities for participation in a variety of athletic experiences Teams are formed by coach-select procedures.Coaches are encouraged to select players of similar skills, desires, and commitment levels to create teams that will participate competitively. The primary objective is to offer a FUN experience in a competitive league where records are kept and awards are given. Equal playing time is encouraged but not guaranteed. Teams may practice more than once per week. Offers expanded league play and/or tournament opportunities. Athletes have the opportunity to expand their abilities and specialize in one or more sports

Spirit Coaches Note: When combining teams for competition, please keep in mind that players and families are sensitive. Do consider the feelings of each player.

Coaches must keep sight of all players involved and make sure each player has an opportunity to play, whether in the Recreational league or in the Spirit League.

If a coach is approached by a player (or parent of a player) currently playing on another team, that person must contact the current coach of the player to let him/her know of the desire to change teams.

Although Spirit leagues are designed to be more competitive, FUN is still of primary importance. The #1 reason kids quit sports is because it is no longer FUN. Please keep this in mind.
