BUILDING CONFIDENCE

fall soccer 2010

It’s not about creating the next Lebron James, Mia Hamm, or even making varsity. It’s about kids being kids, kids having fun, kids staying healthy, and adult volunteers working together to make our community great. Sinking a shot may or may not get a kid into college, but mastering the art of shooting a basketball builds confidence and confidence goes from the court to the classroom.  Confidence follows kids wherever they go and gives kids a boost throughout life.  And when you miss, but keep trying… well that’s perseverance and perseverance will keep you coming back to the Y to practice your shot, work on your game or meet up with friends.   Staying healthy and making good choices; that’s youth development, healthy living and social responsibility in a nutshell. You might not be on the varsity team at your school, but at the Y you always have a place to play.

YMCA Spirit League  is a competitive travel team league open to boys and girls in 4th and 5th grade only. Travel team coaches select players and submit a roster to the YMCA by email. Coaches are guaranteed roster selections and the YMCA does not assign players to teams. Once the roster is submitted players may register on-line or at the YMCA front desk.

Looking for a competitive team but don't know where to begin? Please contact Paul Patterson at Paul.Patterson@helenaymca.org or choose "join team" and then select "independent team" ** when registering online.

**The YMCA cannot guarantee that there will be enough independent players to fill a team. If there are enough players, we will be asking a parent volunteer to coach this team. The YMCA does not have the resources to provide a coach for this team. If there are not enough players to form an independent team, we will place your child on a recreational team. No refunds will be given if your child is placed on a recreational team.

All Fees include referee costs, and a participant award. Financial Assistance is available for those in need. Monies for our Financial Assistance programs are raised each spring through the YMCA’s Annual Campaign.

Give a Little…Get A lot. INSPIRE. LEAD. VOLUNTEER to COACH

Picture1

reg_online_purple

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. The benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

Volunteers are the key to a successful sports league. Each season the YMCA needs volunteers to coach our youth sports teams.  We need coaches year round for a variety of sports, such as volleyball, basketball and soccer! The YMCA needs positive role models that can provide a fun and safe atmosphere for the kids. Click on the Register Online button to be directed to the Coaches Volunteer Application and get ready to make a difference in the life of a child. For more information, contact the Sports Director paul.patterson@helenaymca.org.

PICKLE BALL

Pickleball is one of the country's fastest growing games among all ages.Pball

It's a mix of super-sized ping pong & miniature tennis. Pickleball is fast paced using paddles & a wiffleball on a small playing court utilizing volleys, lob shots, backhands, forehands, and crushing hits.

Games can be played with both doubles and singles on both inside and outside surfaces.

All ages and abilities are welcome to play. At the Y we have three indoor regulation pickleball courts. Play is pickup style and ability levels are often integrated helping to raise skill sets while allowing the game to grow.

The Helena Family YMCA has easy setup nets, wooden paddles, and teal pickleballs for playing. Some players choose to bring a personal paddle and preferred ball.

At the Y pickleball is scheduled weekly and can also be played during open gym time.

Monday 8-11 AM/Wednesday 8-10:30 AM/Friday 8-11 AM/Open Gym Time
